Mountain Professionals, Inc. (MPI) was formed in 1992 when North Carolina removed driver education from the normal school day curriculum. Seeing a need to provide this service, Lee Roy and Sue Ledford formed MPI and started with three contracts and six automobiles. Over the past fourteen years MPI has grown to thirteen contracts and a fleet of thirty vehicles. MPI now has a faculty/staff of 37 professionals. Of these Thirty-seven, thirty-five have BA/BS degrees, twelve have MA/MS degrees, one has an EdS, two have doctoral degrees, two are National Board Certified, and two are North carolina Teaching Fellows. All have DPI/DMV certification in their chosen academic area. MPI now has an annual payroll of over one-half million dollars. Yet MPI maintains a personal approach with teachers, students, parents, administration, and board members of each LEA. We are able to meet the indiviual needs of each. MPI maintains a handicapped controlled automobile for students with special needs.

MPI provides a COMPLETE 30/6 service to each of its clients. Classroom instruction and behind the wheel experience is provided to each student in preparation for their becoming a competent, safe driver under a variety of road conditions. To do this, MPI provides the best teachers and automobiles. We also provide the curriculum and curriculum support conforming to state requirements. We provide all the automobiles, their maintenance, supplies, insurance, signs and equipment, certificates, and record-keeping. in other words, we provide a turn-key service.

All teachers maintain DMV certification by attending in-service training and all MPI instructors belong to the North Carolina Driver and Safety Education Association (NCDTESA). One MPI teacher, Sam Deyton, is currently 1st vice-president and the incoming president of the NCDTESA. Lee Roy Ledford is a past president of the NCDTESA and has served on the board of directors for the past fifteen years.

Additionaly, MPI serves as the provider for the 24th North Carolina Judicial District's Defensive Driving Course. This agreement is in conjuction with Mayland Community College and Caldwell Community and Technical College.
